How important is safety to you? - Small cars

Over the next few weeks I plan to post a series of short articles focusing on safety. We'll take a look at groups of cars that are available on the Thai market. This time we'll have a look at the budget market.

Cheap and cheerful though they might be, are budget cars going to end up costing you an arm and a leg if you have an accident? Is there really much difference between the safety of a Yaris and Jazz? Let's try to find out.

GM's budget brand, Chevrolet, has plans to open a new Parts Delivery Center to meet demands for servicing going forward.

Chevrolet has built up total vehicle sales of over 100,000 units, and expect growth to continue thanks to competitive pricing and 5-year warranties across the range. The range is also growing with the recent introduction of the Aveo, and the expected addition of the Captiva later this year.

For a SUV the Captiva is not bad looking. From the front it is much less offensive looking than the Honda CR-V.

An SUV can never really be all that pretty, but the Captiva looks reasonable. Notice the rear wiper blade is suspended over the metal by a little bracket. This is to allow the rear window to open vertically for quick access.

The Chevrolet Captiva should do okay for Chevrolet. With diesel engine, and 5 year warranty, it will make sense to many seeking a 7 seater SUV.

Captiva Small

As 2006 draws to a close many people seem interested in reviewing the year that was, but bkkAtuos.com would rather look to the future. Before we get into our 2007 forecast, be aware that these are our predictions and might not be entirely accurate.

Although we can't guarantee anything, the information in this preview might be of some use in identifying models that are approaching end of life.

So without further ado, let's get back to the future and see what 2007 (2550) will bring.

Chevrolet extends warranty by 2 years

Chevrolet has announced an extension of its warranty duration by an additional 2 years, or an additional 100,000km, which ever comes first. This effectively means that all new Chevrolet models in Thailand come with the peace-of-mind of a 5-year, 200,000km warranty.

The program is called "Chevrolet Platinum Warranty" and will be introduced to the entire Chevrolet network throughout Thailand.

Mr. John Thomson, Sales and Marketing Vice President for Chevrolet Sales (Thailand) Co., Ltd., expects to finish out 2006 with a total of 35,000 unit sales in Thailand, consisting of 25,000 Colorados, 6,000 Optras and 4,000 Aveos.

Chevrolet had nothing new to offer, despite the recent sighting of the Captiva in Bangkok. This Optra Estate's NGV conversion seems to take away from the practical advantages of owning an estate in the first place.

Exclusive - 2007 Chevrolet Captiva Spy Shots

With the Thailand International Motor Expo just a few weeks away it's to be expected that auto makers will be preparing to debut the odd new addition to their lineups.

We caught up with one of these in Bangkok this evening. At first we believed that we were looking at Honda's new CR-V under heavy disguise, and when we got closer we were sure we saw a Honda badge poking out from under the cladding on the rear of the car.
