Shots fired at man defending car against thieves

Several people are in police custody after bullets were allegedly fired at a person trying to defend his car against thieves.

Police were called to the 800 block of Redwood Avenue just after 2 a.m. on Thursday for reports of shots fired.

Before the gunshots sounded, Carol Suzansky said she woke up hearing loud voices and looked out to see men trying to steal her neighbour's car by breaking its auto glass. The neighbour caught them before they could steal it and used pepper spray to stop them, she said.

"They were coming at him...he was trying to protect his property and his family. He has two little kids," said Suzansky.

Police say one of the suspects produced a handgun and fired shots at the man's residence, before fleeing.

Several police units were called in, including the tactical support team, after receiving reports of a suspect armed with a handgun seen going into another home on Redwood Avenue.

Police secured the area and a number of people were taken into custody without incident about four hours later.

Winnipeg police caution people should not put themselves in harms way for the sake of property.

Suzansky, however, says her neighbour is a hero for defending his family.

A 17-year-old man has been charged with failing to comply with a conditional sentence, while a 19-year-old man has been charged with failing to comply with conditions of a recognizance in connection with the incident, said police.

A firearm was also located within the home and police continue to investigate.
