5 dead in drunk driving crash

It's that time of year again. Some call it the silly season, but there are many silly seasons on Thai roads.

At this time of year the already dreadful death toll rises. In part this is because more people take to the roads, traveling upcountry for new year, but the bigger cause of "accidents", is drink driving.

Each year in Thailand over 14,000 people loose their lives on Thai roads. Of these approximately 80% involve alcohol. As I view drink driving, this means that over 11,000 annual road deaths are avoidable.

If you drink and drive please consider stopping this practice. If you are able to read, then you are smart enough to understand that drink driving is not smart. There is no excuse for putting your life, and the lives of those who share the road with you in danger. No matter how great a driver or drinker you think you are, after your first drink your ability to drive suffers.

These were not the first drink related deaths in Thailand this year. And they won't be the last.
